What Is Sedation Dentistry? Types, Benefits & What to Expect in Apex, NC

Millions of people avoid the dentist not because they don’t care about their teeth, but because anxiety, fear, or a sensitive gag reflex makes sitting through a dental appointment feel impossible. If that sounds familiar, sedation dentistry may be the reason patients in Apex and Cary, NC finally get the care they’ve been putting off. At Magnolia Way Dentistry, Dr. John Wayand offers oral sedation to help patients feel calm, comfortable, and in control during their visit.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s not general anesthesia — you remain conscious and able to respond to instructions — but your anxiety, discomfort, and awareness of the procedure are significantly reduced. For many patients, it’s the difference between avoiding the dentist for years and finally getting the care their oral health needs.

Types of Sedation Used in Dentistry

Different levels of sedation serve different needs. At Magnolia Way Dentistry in Apex, NC, the primary option offered is oral sedation — the most practical and widely used form for general dental care.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescription pill approximately one hour before your appointment. By the time you sit in the chair, anxiety is significantly reduced and you’ll feel deeply relaxed throughout the procedure. You remain awake and can respond to Dr. Wayand, but most patients have little to no memory of the appointment afterward. Because the medication takes time to wear off, you’ll need a driver to bring you home.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. It works quickly and wears off just as fast once the mask is removed. It produces a light, relaxed feeling without the drowsiness of oral sedation, and most patients can drive themselves home afterward. It’s a good option for mild anxiety or shorter procedures.

Key Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

  • More work completed per visit. When you’re relaxed, Dr. Wayand can work more efficiently and complete multiple procedures in a single appointment.
  • Reduced gag reflex. Oral sedation temporarily relaxes the muscles that trigger gagging, making procedures far more comfortable.
  • Little to no memory of the procedure. Most oral sedation patients have minimal recall of the appointment, which helps break the cycle of dental anxiety over time.
  • Faster recovery from dental avoidance. Patients who’ve gone years without care can often catch up on multiple neglected treatments in fewer, more manageable visits.
  • Monitored throughout. Your vital signs are monitored during sedation to ensure your comfort and safety.

Is Sedation Safe?

Oral sedation has an excellent safety record when administered by a trained dentist who reviews your full medical history first. Before recommending sedation, Dr. Wayand discusses your health history, current medications, and any conditions that might affect how you respond. Patients with certain medical conditions may need additional evaluation.

What to Expect at Your Sedation Appointment

For oral sedation, you’ll receive a prescription to fill beforehand. Take the medication as directed — typically one hour before your appointment. Arrange for a trusted adult to drive you to and from the office. Avoid eating for a few hours beforehand as directed. Once you arrive, Dr. Wayand’s team will monitor your comfort throughout and ensure you’re fully recovered before you leave.

I had an excellent experience at Magnolia Way Dentistry. From the moment I walked in, the staff was incredibly welcoming and made the visit feel very personal. I recently had a filling done, and it was the smoothest procedure I’ve ever had, everything was handled with true professionalism. Dr. John is outstanding and truly the best. Highly recommend!

This is an excellent dental practice with warm and caring staff. The dentist is young and most kind. I found them when I moved to town, but had to wait for my other dental insurance to expire so that I could sign up for their annual plan, which is a great deal - probably better than having dental insurance. Highly recommend.

Very pleasant first time experience here. The entire staff very pleasant and answered any questions I had. My cleaning was great, and teeth feel very clean. Dr. John took time to answer my questions and gave me advice on how to keep teeth clean. Over all a great dental practice. I also like that fact that it is a private dental practice.
